“Afternoon Delight” 16×20 oil on canvas
When friends and relatives, especially my Mom, come to visit us, I somehow manage to involve them in my “projects”.  Currently, Mom is visiting us for a few weeks and I thought it was great opportunity to paint from a live model!  Daily Paintworks has a current challenge for “outside your window”. So I sort of incorporated the concept to a painting I’ve been wanting to do which is a room, a window, and sleeping person.  I love paintings of sleeping people probably because I seem to eternally lack sleep or rest.  Thanks Mom for being a good sport! We artists have to be super grateful to anybody who would subject themselves to keeping the same position for hours and days!

By the way, the wall decorations came with the house lol  My husband and I prefer plain actually.
The glamorous life and times of an artist!

  1. Thanks so much for saying that Sheila! As you know I wrote this to you on Facebook, “Sheila, while I was in the shower, washing off all my tiredness from painting this that I feel this was a study of what I really wanted the painting to be. I would have liked a darker interior to show off that comforting daylight from the windows… something more dramatic. But maybe because the windows are kinda big they do light up the room a lot. I often feel my first paintings have the purpose of getting the concept out of my system and the real painting comes out after. This might be the painting to test the urge on….”

I’ll get some distance and revisit my thoughts about needing a darker approach to this painting. The linens have small prints too but I blocked in colors because I was just stealing windows of opportunity to paint this.

  2. Nice job, Tootsie! Mom looks lovely in the glow. :^) You are so lucky to have her for a visit and model.
There is so much light from that window – I’d have to install room darkening blinds to be able to nap.

  3. Tootsie Roll yes I was lucky to get a willing model that’s why I took advantage! She’s like a hummingbird though, always moving or keeps still for 3 minutes unless she actually fell asleep lol

Ohhh I love the natural light it’s like a warm hug!

  4. You are a marvelous artist my dear sister! Painting for you is like telling a story…and a sleeping mom is such a fresh subject. It’s indeed a challenge to paint a live model competing with details of a window and the room. The color is warm and you are consistent with it throughout the painting. I love it! You should try it on a larger scale sometime if given the space.

    Loveya,
    ateeeebeeeeeeeeeeel

  5. I love the color pallet used for this painting. The pastels used in the bedding and the bright warm colors in your mom’s dress and the wall and window in the background work together to make this a stunning piece.
